Stricter Censoring in Nikutaiha Aqua Comics Manga (NSFW!)

The last post was almost a bit too classy and it has been too long since I covered a delicious bara manga.  So I was planning on doing an entry on Oyaji Ana no Mujina. You know, keep with the whole oyaji trend and all~ So I sit down to read my newest Matsu Takeshi treasure and I’m greeted with…

GAH, what the hell is that. Seriously. >.>

Apparently Nikutaiha Aqua Comics, Oakla Shuppan’s bara manga imprint, has greatly changed their level of censorship.  So instead of covering this manga, I’m here to give a warning.  Because…

Frankly, when I buy explicit gay comics, I expect to see one thing: PENIS.

While certainly not the first to change their censorship policy, I’m still incredibly displeased because there was no warning and a very large degree of change.  If I trolled around the Japanese fan blogs enough, I could probably find some coverage, but it doesn’t change the fact that my beautiful Matsu Takeshi oyaji manga was violated. :(

So yeah, I’m upset. I certainly didn’t get the product I was expecting. I’m not sure I’ll buy another book from them, which breaks my manga heart a bit—I love Matsu Takeshi and enjoy their other releases. But the mosiac-level just looks… ridiculous and I can’t support such a drastic change.  How drastic is that change?  Let me show you~  To comply with WordPress’s guidelines, I’m linking NSFW images on my tumblr for comparison.

My Nikutaiha Volume 18: Oyaji Uke anthology has one of the same oneshots from this manga, so I can make direct comparisons!  I don’t know if this level of censorship will be present in future Nikutaiha anthology issues.  Volume 18 was printed on 12/18/2010 while Oyaji Ana no Mujina was printed on 7/12/2011.  An initial, quick search didn’t yield much information. Right then.  Let’s get on with this:

These are ALL NSFW.

Notice how inconsistent the censoring itself is–massive, hairy balls and rectums are cool in their full glory, but absolutely no penis shaft/head. Okay then! Here’s another direct comparison.

Actually, I just wanted to show off his awesome skillz that he’s performing to land a role in an amateur porno XD.  I really liked this story… but massive, pixelated dongs are surprisingly freaky looking.

What did censoring in other Aqua Comics bara manga look like before this change?  Here’s some more examples. The lack of censoring here is impressive.

I could understand (but not condone) some increase in censoring to align with other similar media, but to go from what’s shown above to Oyaji Ana no Mujina’s content in one go is too extreme.  You don’t see that level of censoring in BL manga.  Wait, I’m not even toying with that train of thought…

Fantastic.  Now where am I supposed to get my bara fix?!

  1. Gah! Censoring! It’s happening everywhere. I was so heartbroken when Koshino’s Samejima-kun to Sasahara-kun penis and hairy balls were censored using white bars. I can’t believe they’re doing this for bara too. D: *pats*

    • Aww, that book looked so cute too! That’s a big disappointment. I dislike when the artwork is so clumsily ruined. :( I’m worried this will become a big trend. Hopefully it won’t be like the dark ages of BL and its invisi-penis. D:

  2. The very first pic was the first one to catch my attention and left me pondering for a while if it’s a penis or probably two men on a bed under the blanket, completely hidden… but then what would that white liquid be O.o
They shouldn’t call it bara anymore. It’s totally sex with pixels /pixel me!/
But seriously wth. There are tons of better ways of censoring. And what me always annoys the most about pixels is just like you said, they leave everything else open and then penil is covered with mosaic, it doesn’t take to be smart ot figure what’s hidden. It’s super stupid.
Have you found any official news about it? At least I hope the same thing won’t happen with BL =.=’

    • One doesn’t have to be smart, to figure out what’s hidden there —- that’s what I wanted to say =.=’ My typos are getting more unbelievable each day.

    • lol, I didn’t see it before, but that image kinda does look like two people under a blanket (with a mysterious white thing flowing out :O) It’s like the cloud game where we guess shapes!

But yeah, the level of censorship is almost embarrassing, especially for a genre that is known to cater to more hardcore tastes. Pixel sex is NOT hot. :/

It looks like a 10 year old censored it :/ Very sloppy, no grace, overdone. But I guess at least those who enjoy hairy balls the most are still safe?! haha

I haven’t found any official news yet.. I’ve looked just a little. Not sure what the proper term/slang is for better searching. What disturbs me is when I see blogs/reviews on this manga and some don’t even seem to *mention* the censoring. It’s like… uuuh, elephant in the room, hidden behind that mosaic splash? I’ve not seen any outraged or particularly negative reaction either… hmm.

      I really, really hope it isn’t a trend.. but we seem to hear about it more and more… ;_;

  3. That’s just…sad. I always think, why would you censor something intended for adults? Unless, of course, they want to sell it to a younger audience.
Sigh, my heart broke when I saw this happening in Mousou Elektel, is not as bad as that awful mosaic but still…you can compare with the magazine chapters and it is just :(

    • They are bowing to some pressure, but the fact that their censoring went from super hardcore to worse than 90′s invisi-penis is not good :O

Bleh about Mousou Elektel.. it’s too pretty to mess up. I own volume 1, but I don’t think I’ll be getting volume 2 like that.. :/

  4. The censoring looks absolutely horrible! If you’re buying something explicit, you would of course want the explicit parts to be shown. I recently read the first volume of Ane Ana (completely different genre, showing heterosexual relations for a male audience) and was shocked by the censoring. The bara comic that you mentioned does at least show that there is something there, but in Ane Ana, that body part is not even shown. Just nothing – some white area at the most – although something white popped out of nothing.

NSFW example from Ane Ana: http://i.imgur.com/yAuGS.jpg

Nothing there? But what’s that liquid white thing that’s flowing in the air? What’s the woman licking on? Certainly it’s not ice-cream or ikayaki or the like. Could it be just thin air? But then, why is there a shadow from her finger and what’s hiding her left hand?

    Even better NSFW example: http://i.imgur.com/N0KdH.jpg

Now what’s she’s licking at? This time, it’s completely invisible! This problem seems to be affecting all explicit genres.

    • Oh man, that second one looks like she’s doing crazy things to thin air. Due to my stalking interests, I’ve only heard about it increasing with BL, so it’s sad to see it’s happening on the other side as well. :( I have to wonder about their market–if they censor that much, what’s the draw to keep buying their product? Even if I enjoy the stories in my bara, the clumsy censoring (or complete cutting out :O) is so distracting and ugly.

      • Yup, it looks silly and they probably lose readers that way. All of the titles mentioned here seem to be treated as “normal” comics (as opposed to “18-illegal” comics) on major web sites such as Amazon and BK1, although “Ane Ana” is considered “18-illegal” on Futabasha’s own web site. Maybe that’s why: more censorship might be needed in order to avoid the “18-illegal” mark with Tokyo’s new anti-comics regulation in force.

    • I was wondering if the change was a knee-jerk reaction to align with the new regulations, but I haven’t bought enough from them lately to judge when they switched over. I hope they figure out something reasonable, as it’s going to hurt their business. I hope you enjoy Furou Kyoudai and Light Novel btw :)
